Grumpy Bear

The air conditioner at work is freezing and the ceiling tiles above my desk are dripping from some clogged line somewhere. I’m wearing a sweater and socks and my space heater is running while I’m listening to the plip-plop of three seperate leaks. Outside, it’s beautiful and warm and sunny.

This is like working in a Dickens novel.

Date night

A’s boy was home for the evening and willing to G-sit and my boy is, per usual, across the country, so she and I met up for delicious Thai food, delicious drinks (mojitos with a touch of chili) and Indiana Jones. It was a perfect summer evening with the added fun of a little vertigo.

the movie theater has this ridiculous escalator going up the sides of the lobby, which is easily two stories tall, and looks to rival Dupont Circle Metro, only there’s nothing around you to block the view. It might have been more fun than the movie, even.

Shiny

The sun was coming through the clouds at just the right angle to catch the copper edging on the window and roofline.

hot Saturday

One of the great things about living here is the small town/big city contrast. Last night, Katye and I left work together. We walked over to the library, then she went home and I stopped off to return a pair of shoes and went home myself. then, this morning, we headed into DC for yummy Tonic brunch and then the Smithsonian Folklife Festival.

this year, they are highlighting the cultures of NASA, Bhutan and the food, music and wine of Texas. I can only think that they pick them out of a hat, because you’d make yourself crazy trying to find the commonalities between them. Also, who knew Texas had wine?

It was HOT, but kind of breezy and anyway, once we had ice cream and wandered through Realisms at the Hirshhorn, we were all comfortable again.

surprise

The bitty baby morning glories that MisAdventure and I picked up at Dupont at the beginning of May have grown gloriously (and also, a little scarily). One has been blooming all along with vivid purple flowers:

the other (and actually, until this morning, I’d forgotten there were two seperate plants) has been concentrating on stretching and so, no blooms until now:

Sky Blue!

on the bandwagon (foot wagon)?

I read the article about the Vivo Barefoot shoes at the beginning of the summer and was intrigued. I do A LOT of walking these days and, while I’ve mostly given up on my LA high heels, I’m always on the lookout for cute, comfortable flats.

The Odette has been out of stock since the article came out and white was the first color back in. Not my first choice, but good for summer. So far, they are nice for walking, as you really can feel the difference in ground surfaces, although I’m not having the revelatory exerience that the author did. Maybe I go barefoot more than he does. And the tightness of the elastic at the Achilles tendon is giving me New Shoe blisters.

I’ll reconsider once they are broken in. And next time, I might go for the tennis shoes. Also? I swear I’m not orange-colored. Stupid camera phone.

Dead Bug

I saw this walking to work. It’s huge. Also, really pretty and if I made jewelry, I might have picked it up and preserved it in amber or something. Since I don’t, I just took a picture and was secretly glad to have met it when it was helpless, as I’m pretty sure that it could have taken me in a fight.

this is for you, Sadie Blue

it’s her favorite color and her favorite animal and I was talking to her on my way home from a meeting when I saw it.

Reward

I’ve been thinking that I really need to get out more after work, so I walked to the Metro with Jess and headed into DC. My goal was to pick up some stuff at Urban Outfitters that I’d seen over the weekend (no patience for the Georgetown lines) and wander the National Gallery.

I hit the UO, and got a salad keeper and salad spinner at Bed, Bath & Beyond (it was a good day for greens) and came out to see the wind picking up and a touch of rain in the air. By the time I was back at King Street, it was raining pretty steadily, but the sun was shining madly.

And so, rainbow: a beautiful double one. This was the best I could manage on my phone, but there are some really good ones here and here.

Exotic

the crazy summer lightning and thunder rainstorms never get old, especially when they are accompanied by shining sun.
