Anne of … the Island, I think

anyway, when I look at this, all I can think is Gog and Magog.

Well, that and I could so live here

art imitates TV?

Possibly too much Buffy, but when I look at this statue

all I can see is Drucilla

Uncanny, ya?

Day 4 - wandering alone

Wandered around the Capital today after work because the rain let up. My first solo adventure! and it’s nice to be out.

although it looks like it might rain again at any moment.

I ended up over on Pennsylvania Avenue because of a pesky reflecting pool.

oh, right. That Pennsylvania Ave. So I walked down to see the White House. The National Christmas Tree in the Ellipse is small and sad.

Day 2 - Really here

Made it through the first day of work. Wandered down the National Mall afterwards with Blas and Amanda, seeing the Sites:

The Capital

Smithsonian Air and Space

the Smithsonian Castle (my favorite)

the Washington Monument

the White House

Huh.

Welcome to the Rest of the Summer or One Day Down

In a bid to be social and Get Along, I got on a bus with a bunch of other interns and went to Maryland. The adjacency of these state lines are freaking me out. We passed by something called Wolf Trap, which is apparently like the Hollywood Bowl, which should mean something to me once I’ve moved to LA. This is from Amanda, a DC student and LA native that I was sitting next to for the trip. This ends up being important because the bus let us out here:

Beautiful. Empty. It was like junior high recess with a bunch of kids flirting and barbecue. I couldn’t stand it and fortunately, neither could Amanda, who fortunately, had some clue about where we were. So we hiked out of the park to a gas station, called a cab and had it take us to the Shady Grove Metro. On the way, we passed Kentlands, which was sort of like seeing a celebrity and made me feel very knowledgable, which was nice in the midst of all of the confusion. Trust me when I say that I’m making our exodus sound much easier than it was.

Anyhow, to underline the point that anything can happen here, one minute, I’m stuck in Maryland with barbecue chicken and the next, I’m grocery shopping at the Safeway in the Watergate and still got home in time to see my first Alexandria sunset.

Tomorrow, it’s Maya meets the Library of Congress.

departures and arrivals

I’m a bundle of cliches today - leaving on a jetplane

and Home Sweet Hotel tower

This place is a collection of three residential towers, all full of corporate apartments. I have two housemates (Texas and Puerto Rico) and a roommate (Texas, but Boston for college). It’s a fifteen minute walk to the Huntington metro and we’re pretty deep in suburbia. There’s supposed to be a shuttle to the metro in the morning and a Saturday morning grocery shuttle.

This is weird. Exciting, but weird.
